What is Dorsal Column Stimulation?
Dorsal column spinal stimulation is a technique used to manage certain types of chronic spine pain. The dorsal column stimulator device delivers low voltage electricity to the posterior area of the spinal cord with the goal of reducing the duration, intensity, and frequency of certain types of chronic pain.
How can it Help with Chronic Pain Management?
The dorsal column spinal stimulator has three components: stimulating electrodes, an electrical pulse generator, and a generator remote control.
The device must first be surgically implanted into the body. Once this is done, mild electricity can be delivered through the stimulating electrodes that are connected to the spinal cord; this can be done by using the remote control whenever pain is being experienced. This electricity lessens the intensity of the pain by distracting and interrupting the pain signal traveling from the spinal nerves to the brain.
While dorsal column spinal stimulation cannot eliminate an individual’s pain, it can provide significant enough relief that allows patients to perform daily tasks more easily and comfortably.
Who is a Candidate for this Treatment?
Before patients can begin any spinal treatment, Dr. Kuwamura must first thoroughly evaluate their condition and history of pain. Typically, dorsal column spinal stimulation treatments are reserved for patients who:
- Have experienced crippling pain for more than 12 months
- Have pain in their lower back
- Have not benefited from conservative treatments
- Have not benefited from previous spinal surgeries
- Do not have any medical conditions that would make implantation dangerous
